What is Form 7004?
Form 7004 is the Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File Certain Business Income Tax, Information, and Other Returns. It gives your business an automatic extension of up to **6 months** to file your tax return.
Who Should File Form 7004?
File Form 7004 if you need more time to file any of these business returns:
- Form 1120 — C Corporation income tax return
- Form 1120-S — S Corporation income tax return
- Form 1065 — Partnership return
- Form 1041 — Estate and trust income tax return
- Form 990 — Tax-exempt organization return (some types)
Important: Extension to File vs. Extension to Pay
Form 7004 extends the **time to file** your return, NOT the time to pay your taxes. You must:
- Estimate your tax liability when filing Form 7004
- Pay any estimated tax due with your extension request
- File your complete return by the extended deadline
Failure to pay estimated taxes can result in penalties and interest, even if you filed for an extension.
When to File Form 7004
- March 15 — For S-Corps (Form 1120-S) and partnerships (Form 1065)
- April 15 — For C-Corps (Form 1120) and other entity types

- Professional preparation — Give your accountant more time during busy season
- No negative impact — Filing an extension does not increase your audit risk
